Service of a Conventional Fire Panel as per SANS 10139 Clause 12 Maintenance:

Purpose & Frequency of Service:

  • Servicing a fire detection system does not constitute a review of system design; it is a verification of the functionality of the existing system.
  • Accordingly, it is not necessarily the case that non-compliance with this standard will be identified at the time of routine servicing, particularly if the original design is not available.
    • Any such advice provided to the user by IBR Fire cannot be regarded (by users, enforcing authorities or any other party) as an implication that the maintenance technician has identified, or has endeavoured to identify, all such areas of non-compliance, or that there has been any review of the original design.
  • The period between successive inspection and servicing visits should not exceed 6 months. If this recommendation is not implemented, it should be considered that the system is no longer compliant with this standard.

12.2.4 Recommendations for inspection and testing of the Detection system over a 12-month period:

The work described may be carried out over two or more services in 12 months.

  • All automatic fire detectors should be functionally tested.
    • The tests used need to prove only that the detectors are connected to the system and are operational.
    • Where fitted, detector remote indicators should also be checked for correct operation.
    • Record manufacturing dates (10-year life span as per manufacturer specification)
  • All fire alarm devices should be checked for correct operation.
  • Radio signal strengths in radio-linked systems to which 8.20 applies should be checked for adequacy and the results recorded
  • Confirm 24 Hour Remote Monitoring is Active and Functional
  • Location Descriptions checked for accuracy
  • Confirm Class B Wiring with the correct placement of the End-of-Line Resistor per SANS 10139 and Manufacturer Specifications.
  • The owner should check the standby power supply capacity to confirm the suitability of continued service.
  • Confirm a suitable zone plan of the premises is provided on or adjacent to all control and indicating equipment and repeat indicating equipment.
    • Where repeat indicating equipment relates to only part of the premises, the adjacent zone plan need only relate to that part of the premises.
